How I Love to Dress My Home for Autumn 🍁
There’s something about the shift from summer to autumn that always makes me want to press pause and cosy up at home. The air gets crisper, the evenings darker, and suddenly I find myself craving warmth, texture, and those golden autumn colours indoors.
Layering for Cosiness
The first thing I do is swap out my lighter summer textiles for warmer, more tactile ones. Think thick knitted throws, boucle or velvet cushions, and an extra blanket draped over the end of the bed or sofa. It’s amazing how quickly these layers make a room feel inviting — almost like giving your home a big hug.
Playing with Autumn Colours
For me, colour is where autumn really comes to life. Rusty oranges, burnt reds, deep greens, and golden mustards instantly transform a space. I don’t go all out with a full redesign — just a few swaps, like a new cushion cover, rug, or piece of art, can set the whole tone for the season.
Setting the Mood with Lighting
Lighting is everything as the days get shorter. I love turning off the big overhead lights and instead dotting the house with softer, ambient lamps. Candles are my absolute must-have — the flicker, the scent, and the glow just feel so comforting. My go-to autumn fragrances are oak, sandalwood, and pumpkin spice (because it really doesn’t feel like autumn without it!).
Bringing the Outdoors In
Autumn is such a beautiful season outdoors, and I like to carry a little of that inside too. Dried flowers, pampas grass, or even a simple seasonal wreath on the front door add such a natural, rustic charm. I’ll often gather pinecones or branches on a walk and pop them into a vase — it’s those little touches that make home feel more connected to the season.
Seasonal Finishing Touches
This is where I have a little fun — a few decorative pumpkins on the sideboard, a cosy mug on the coffee table, or autumn-inspired table linens for Sunday lunch. Nothing over the top, just thoughtful little nods to the season that make me smile.
For me, dressing my home for autumn isn’t about big changes or spending a fortune. It’s about embracing the season, creating warmth, and making my space somewhere I actually want to slow down and spend time in. After all, autumn is the season for cosiness, comfort, and home.
