Accessorising: Less Is More
Accessories are often described as the finishing touches of a room — the pieces that add personality, warmth and character once the larger design decisions have been made. But when it comes to styling your home, more doesn’t always mean better.
At Dalby Home Interiors, we believe that thoughtful styling is about choosing the right pieces, rather than filling every available surface. A carefully selected collection of accessories can make a room feel considered, elegant and complete, while too many competing pieces can quickly make even a beautifully designed space feel cluttered.
Give Your Accessories Room to Breathe
One of the easiest mistakes to make when accessorising is feeling that every shelf, table, windowsill and empty corner needs something on it.
It doesn’t.
Negative space is an important part of interior design. Leaving areas intentionally empty gives the pieces you do choose greater impact and allows the eye to move comfortably around the room.
Instead of filling an entire console table, for example, consider one beautiful lamp, a small stack of books and a decorative object. The simplicity creates a much stronger statement.

Choose Pieces You Actually Love
Accessories should tell a little of your story.
Rather than buying decorative pieces simply because they match your colour scheme, choose items that have meaning, interest or that you genuinely enjoy looking at.
A favourite piece of artwork, a vase discovered while travelling, a treasured photograph or an unusual object can bring far more personality to a room than a collection of accessories bought purely to fill space.
Your home should feel curated, not staged.
Style in Groups
When displaying smaller accessories, grouping them together can create a much more intentional look.
Odd numbers — particularly groups of three — work beautifully. Try combining objects with different heights, shapes and textures, such as:
- a tall vase with greenery
- a candle or smaller decorative piece
- a sculptural ornament or favourite object
Placing them together on a tray can help visually anchor the arrangement and make several individual pieces feel like one considered display.
Mix Height, Shape and Texture
A successful arrangement shouldn't consist of several objects at exactly the same height.
Introduce variation.
Pair something tall with something low, something structured with something organic, or a smooth ceramic finish with natural timber, glass, metal or textured fabric.
These subtle contrasts create depth without requiring lots of accessories.

Don't Forget Scale
Sometimes a room doesn't need more — it needs something bigger.
A common styling mistake is using lots of small accessories to fill a large space. Instead, one oversized vase, substantial table lamp, large piece of artwork or beautiful sculptural object can have considerably more impact.
Larger pieces can also make a room feel calmer because there are fewer individual objects competing for attention.
Repeat, Don't Over-Match
A cohesive room doesn't require every accessory to be the same colour.
Instead, subtly repeat elements from elsewhere in the design.
If your room includes black detailing, for example, introduce a small amount of black through a frame, candleholder or decorative object. If warm timber appears within the furniture, echo it through a bowl, tray or picture frame.
The aim is to create connection rather than perfect coordination.
Edit Your Displays
Sometimes the best styling decision you can make is to remove something.
Once you've finished accessorising, stand back and look at the room as a whole. If an area feels busy, take one or two pieces away and look again.
You might be surprised by how much better the remaining pieces look.
You can also rotate accessories throughout the year rather than displaying everything at once. It keeps your home feeling fresh and gives forgotten favourites an opportunity to take centre stage.
The Dalby Approach: Less, But Better
Beautiful interiors aren't created by filling every available space.
They're created through considered choices, balance and knowing when a room is finished.
Choose pieces that complement your home, introduce personality and mean something to you. Allow space around them, vary your scale and resist the temptation to keep adding.
Because when it comes to accessorising, sometimes the smallest edit can make the biggest difference.
Less clutter. More impact. More you.
